The Necks (aus)

When we say that Australian power-trio The Necks are the most trance-inducing band we ever brought to the festival, it’s no understatement. Their hypnotic soundscapes, composed of piano, contrabass and drums defy all labels and categories, and are so damn captivating that we simply had to bring them along so that you can hear them for yourself!

Witness these eclectic compositions in all their might, as very few bands achieve this level of epic sound-scaping, with equal force, magnitude, but also skill as The Necks! A jazz trio by definition, everything but, by practice, The Necks have defied, repelled, and reshaped this genre’s boundaries for over 20 years, releasing just as many records and collecting countless accolades. Re-defining the jazz trio with full improvisational character, innate musicianship and a healthy dose of “who cares about labels anyway” seems to be their moniker and their illustrious career proves that if you love what you do, people will react to it and gravitate towards it.

Self-non-defined as “not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz”, The Necks are simply… themselves! We’re purposely avoiding describing their music to 1, not doing you a disservice and 2, not offending them, so we thought we’d give you a little anecdote about what happened when we received an email from them last year. Here at the dunk!HQ we listened to the band’s newest single/album Bleed and we loved it! A sprawling 42-minute long sonic adventure, this piece transported us elsewhere without us even noticing, and 42 minutes later we suddenly snapped back to reality, signed them for the festival and returned to our work. Legend says the piece is still playing in the background.
