As you all know by now this is our 20th edition and as such it is all about celebrations! And what better way to celebrate than inviting Canadian noise-engineer thisquietarmy who is coincidentally also celebrating 20 years of noisy activity? Join us for a special performance that is so full of meaning not for us but the artist as well! 10 years after his infamous unplanned, unscripted, and unforgettable Forest-stage set, thisquietarmy returns to the festival with a one-of-a-kind exclusive performance of his upcoming album “Langue Hybride”! And to celebrate in full dunk! style, he’s bring a full band to give this album a whole new and never-heard-before dimension! This exclusive performance was conceived specifically for the festival, as a special contribution to our programming but also to our legacy by the artist.
For those unfamiliar with thisquietarmy sprawling and intense sonicscapes, we’ll try our best to describe them for you, although we do think they really just need to be heard and experienced. Truly defying categorisation, but also definition, thisquietarmy is a drone and noise sound alchemist, known for an all-encompassing yet forever-evolving sonic approach. His sound contractions amply blend noise elements and drone loops with ambient backdrops, field recordings, and guitar and drums samples to unleash a truly intricate wall of sound that truly breathe with an organic essence and transform like a living, breathing landscape. But even those familiar with the artist and his sound experiments will often find themselves bewildered and wrong-footed by his never-compromising compositional style, which features anything that emits or reflects sound and even those objects you didn’t know that did! Forever chasing, pushing, and delivering the unexpected, thisquietarmy has become synonym with sound exploration in its finest, most noble form.
We’re excited to renew our collaboration with him and can’t wait to hear these new compositions! He will be presenting all-new music from his upcoming eclectic album (slated for release in April), which serves as the follow-up to his previous full-band effort “The Body and the Earth”. So to those reading these lines and waiting to explore more, we suggest starting from there. Let’s see where this incredible journey takes you, we hope to our new home in Gent in time for his very special set. This is another one of those bucket list moments for us that we simply cannot wait to share with you come May! Join us in celebration of music in its truest, most challenging yet most rewarding form!
